Given the expense of owning a pool, it makes sense to be able to use it for as long as you can from spring to fall.  One way to do this is to install a heater. You can either purchase a gas-fired unit or an electric heat pump.

Please note that to size a heater correctly you must consider pool size and/or surface area, average wind speed, average ambient temperature, and the desired temperature rise. A heater that is too small for a pool may only add 5-10 degrees to the water, less during colder ambient temperatures or windy days, and more during the hot part of the summer, that is least desired. A larger heater can add up to 30 degrees in temperature rise, no matter what the air temperature or wind speed. A cover will also reduce recovery time and make any pool heater more efficient. It is simple and there are 3 basic methods to checking your propane tank level—the hot water method, checking the actual tank gauge, or installing a tank monitor. Save yourself some time and unnecessary phone calls by being self-sufficient and capable of ascertaining as to when you need a propane delivery from Pennywise-if you are not already receiving automatic deliveries. Life is busy and the last thing you need to worry about is running out of propane.

If you are not receiving our automatic delivery service, it is essential that you check your propane level to ensure that you have a consistent supply of propane to power your appliances and your home. If you have a tank that holds less than 48 gallons (no tank gauges on this size tank), then the most simple and quickest way to check your propane level is by utilizing the hot water method. You simply fill up a cup of hot tap water and pour it down the side of the tank. Then run your hand down the side of the tank until you feel a cool spot. The top of the cool spot will be the fill level of the tank. The propane absorbs the heat from the water, therefore the tank above the estimated fill line will remain hot.

Most of our propane tanks are installed with tank gauges. Forty-eight-gallon tanks or more are the ones that possess tank gauges, as mentioned earlier. There are 3 types of tank gauges—inline pressure gauges (the ones that we provide), analog propane scales, and digital propane tank scales.

Reading a gauge is very straightforward. The tank gauge can usually be found under the cover and next to the fill pipe. Numbers between 10-80 are displayed. These are percentages of how much is left in the tank. Your propane tank will never be filled above 80% to allow for expansion. Expansion is mostly caused by the hot weather. We recommend that you do not call us until your tank is at 30% or less to avoid a short fill fee..

The best way to check the level of your propane is with the installation of a propane tank monitor. If you have a gauge, this technology allows us to view your tank levels and we will give you a call, notifying you to give us a call for a delivery. If Pennywise Fuel installs a tank monitor on your propane tank, we will set you up with automatic deliveries to avoid running out of propane. You must first fill out a credit application in order to be approved for this service and you must also have at least (2) 120-gallon tanks, equaling 240 total gallons. Automatic deliveries allow you the peace of mind of never running out of propane. The reasons people run out of propane are because they neglected to check their tank level or because of a gas leak.

Propane tank size does matter because the pricing of the propane is affected by a couple of different factors due to tank size. The number of appliances used and the size of the dwelling are the two factors that can affect pricing of propane, which relates also to tank size.

Tank sizes vary. Tanks can hold 23, 60, 120, 250, 325, 500 and 1,000 gallons of propane. Should I purchase a tank that holds 250 gallons or 500 gallons of propane? Most people do not know the answer to this question. The answer to this question is that It depends on the amount of usage.

Utilizing a larger tank does not necessarily mean that you will save in the end because if you are not using the larger amount of fuel, then it’s not worth it to pay extra for a larger tank. Vaporization is a key factor, especially in the colder months, so why purchase extra fuel if it is not going to last? The larger tanks cost more, so you should utilize a tank according to the amount of fuel that you will use.
